Spotting Scopes
The real professional hunters sometimes find binoculars just don’t have enough power to capture distant images although they make good hunting accessory. These binoculars are usually 7x or 10x, but the spotting scopes basically start at nearly 15x and can go up to nearly 60x. This means that they make objects appear nearly 10 to 60 times closer than they are actually. Even the smallest target that you happen to locate nearly 600 feet away would appear just 10 feet away with the60x spotting scope power. There are a number of manufacturers who design and manufacture spotting scopes and there are thousands of them to choose from according to your personal hunting needs.
Spotting scopes open up a whole new world to you whether you are watching birds or boats. These scopes actually let you see things that might be impossible even with the binoculars. Most of the people think that choosing the best spotting scopes for their hunting gear is very difficult, but the fact is that it is much easier than choosing binoculars. This is because there are far less models in spotting scopes to choose from and so for the most part it would often depend on how much you can spend. Apart from this there are also some other characteristics that you should look for in spotting scopes.
Objective Size
Generally there are just two sizes to choose from the 77-82mm and 60-65, mm scopes which refer to their diameter in front objective size. Earlier the 66mm scopes ware the standard size but it changed after 77mm shooting scopes were launched. However there are also 80mm scopes that can gather nearly 65percent lighter than the 66mm scopes which can actually make a great difference when watching high powers under low light. However you will have to decide for yourself whether added weight and size are worth it.
The Eyepieces
There are spotting scopes available with fixed or zoom power eyepieces that can range from 15 x to nearly 60 x. However it is actually easier to find your piece at low power with a zoom that suits your hunting needs. The zoom has recently become very advanced making them the first consideration when purchasing spotting scopes. Although zooms are very sharp optically they would have narrow field view. However you can add two scopes together with one 20-60 zoom at 30x and the other with around 30x wide angle eyepiece, and the result is striking. You would actually get wider field through 30 x.
Other options or features
You should include waterproof spotting scopes and ones with high performance glass. All the scope manufacturers would have their own designation such as HD, APO or ED. In simple this special glass actually brings all the colors in focus in the same plane. The normal multicoated spotting scopes are outstanding and they are a bit better for hunters with especially discerning eye or with dig scoping photography in mind. Additionally you will have also have to decide whether you need a straight or an angled spotting scope model which is often a personal choice according to your hunting needs.
